Ong Hut Co in Vietnam owned by Tran Minh Tien, produces biodegradable straws made from Sedge grass, also called Lepironia Articulata. The products are entirely natural and handcrafted. The company does not use chemicals during processing or storage.
Sedge grass grows wild across the wetlands of Vietnam. It is a long grass with a hollow stem, which makes it a perfect straw for those who want to go Green.
The grass is washed and cut into tubes of 20cm long. The inside of the grass is cleaned out with an iron rod. After that, it has to be cleaned inside and outside. Once washed it’s wrapped in banana leaves. The straws can be preserved in a sealed bag in the fridge, for approximately two weeks.
To make the dried straws they are left out in the sun for 2 to 3 days and then baked in an oven. The dry straws kept at room temperature will last for up to 6 months.
The company specifies fore use the straws should be soaked in water, soapnut, salt water or even boiled in water before it can be used.
Unfortunately, Ong Hut Co is currently only shipping within the country of Vietnam, but they are hoping to expand soon.
There are other natural straws on the market;
- Biodegradable Plastic Straws also known as PLA (polylactic acid), made from plant starches and oil, typically corn. They made from plants, and decompose naturally.
- Natural wheat straws, 100% biodegradable.
- Silicone straws which burn into biodegradable ash.
- Bamboo straws.
Our planet has a severe problem. By the year 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. This matter seriously needs to be addressed.
