smudging

There are a lot of people that use smudging these days as a means of cleansing their homes of negative energies, as well as spirits. However, one recent study suggests it could be far more beneficial than we think.

Smudging for those that are not aware is a Native American method of burning sacred herbs for producing smoke. But, Native Americans are not the only ones that can or do use this method. This smoke is used for a lot of different things. Sage is also the most commonly smudged herb.

One study from recently which was in the journal Ethnopharmacology back in 2007, looked at how an hour of treatment in the form of medicinal smoke can affect bacterial life. In just one hour, the researchers have noticed a 95% decrease in bacteria. The smoke itself also maintained air purity for up to 24 hours in a closed room.

The abstract of the study goes in the following way:

“This study represents a comprehensive analysis, as well as scientific validation of our ancient knowledge about the effect of ethnopharmacological aspects of natural products’ smoke for therapy and health care on airborne bacterial composition and dynamics, using the Biolog microplate panels and Microlog database. We have also observed that 1h treatment of medicinal smoke emanated by burning wood and a mixture of odoriferous and medical herbs, on aerial bacterial population which caused over 94% reduction of bacterial counts by 60 min and the ability of the smoke to purify or disinfect the air, as well as to make the environment cleaner was maintained up to 24h in the closed room. The absence of pathogenic bacteria such as Corynebacterium urealyticum, as well as Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens, Enterobacter aerogenes (Klebsiella mobilis), Kocuria rosea, Pseudomonas syringae PV. persicae, Staphylococcus lentus, and Xanthomonas campestris PV. tardicrescens in the open room even after 30 days is indicative of the bactericidal potential of the medicinal smoke treatment. We have also demonstrated that by using medical smoke, it is also possible to eliminate diverse plant, as well as human pathogenic bacteria of the air within confined space.”

They could conclude that the benefits of smudging are completely viable. As you may also know, the overuse of antibiotics has also caused a huge issue in regards to superbugs and extreme pollution. This can also be our answer on some level when it comes to killing off their bacteria.

Conventional sterilization methods usually employ tons of different unhealthy chemicals that are much less effective than they are made out to be. Because smudging is natural, it is also a much safer method to use.

The only problem at hand in regards to ‘natural alternatives’ such as this one, is lack of research. Because of Big Pharma, little research can be done on this sort of thing. Sure, more research also has to be done, but will it be done? Only time will tell and know.
